ESSEX COMPUTER SHUTDOWN
The University of Essex DEC system - 10 is being withdrawn from service
from Saturday, 5th June 1976 to allow the main computer system to be put on
a smoothed motor-alternator driven supply which will take fluctuations
out of the main supply and improve computer reliability. The current
cable layout, which at the moment is on the limits of the manufacturers'
specification lengths, will be improved in order to accept possible
future enhancements with the minimum of downtime. The layout of the
machine room will also be rearranged from both maintenance and operational
It is expected that this work will take at least one week and may extend
possibly to three weeks. Standby arrangements are in hand to run some
work on other machines but the position is complicated by the fact that
no other DEC system - 10 installation has an identical configuration to
